Featuring Alia McCants of Peloton, David McGhee of the Steve Fund, this 45 minute session will delve into the principles for practicing inclusive philanthropy and establishing trust with stakeholder communities.
Alia McCants has been fortunate enough to build a career in the pursuit of a more equitable world. In her role as Senior Director of ESG and Social Impact Lead at Peloton, Alia leads the development and execution of strategies aimed at addressing systemic inequities in physical and mental wellness, leveraging Peloton's wide-ranging resources to bring about social change.
Alia's dedication to this important work stems from her extensive background in education, including her leadership at both the Relay Graduate School of Education and the Match School.
Her commitment to social justice has been recognized through her selection as a Pahara Fellow and membership in the Aspen Global Leaders Network.
Alia is a proud alumna of Spelman College and Columbia Business School, where she honed her skills as a strategic thinker and innovative problem-solver. She is an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and deeply committed to supporting her local community.
Originally from San José, California, Alia now resides in White Plains, New York, with her husband, twin fourth graders, and a Yorkie mix named Nipsey Snuggle.
David R. McGhee, CEO of The Steve Fund, is an experienced change agent and servant leader in the non-profit, government, higher education, and philanthropic sectors. He is dedicated to empowering marginalized communities and strongly advocates for the well-being of children, youth, families, and communities. McGhee has held leadership roles in prominent organizations such as The Schultz Family Foundation and The Skillman Foundation and has designed, developed, and delivered strategies, programs, and initiatives at the national and local levels. He is known for his ability to execute organizational development and change efforts effectively and inspire teams to achieve significant results. McGhee's commitment to service is reflected in his involvement in various national boards and committees and his role as an adjunct professor at Oakland University and Mott Community College. He holds a bachelor's degree from Oakland University and a master's from Central Michigan University.
With nearly 20 years of foundation experience in both the nonprofit and for-profit sectors, Erin provides deep expertise in philanthropy and corporate social impact. Her client service approach is rooted in not only centering the company but also in centering their donor partners and the communities they serve. Her resume includes building large strategic investment programs from the ground up to the implementation of smaller impact efforts such as employee engagement or a consumer activation effort. She has worked with several companies including Zoom, Sephora, Okta, Best Buy, Google and more. Erin sits on the independent advisory committee of the Advancing Girls Fund.
Alicia brings over 15 years of experience in the social impact sector to Tides, including her work in nonprofit programs, management, development, and governance; corporate social impact strategy; and nonprofit management consulting. Alicia co-leads Tides’ Corporate Social Impact team and holds her own portfolio of complex corporate partners seeking to create lasting social change. Her portfolio includes partners focused on climate justice, tech for good, Black liberation, the LGBTQIA+ community, women’s mental health, international development, impact investing, crisis response, and more.Â
Prior to Tides, Alicia was a Managing Consultant at BDO FMA, consulting with nonprofits and foundations on a variety of topics including: social impact strategy, financial sustainability, multi-year strategic planning, board governance, c3/c4 charitable vehicles, and trust-based philanthropy. She was a founding member of Funders for Real Change, a groundbreaking multi-year funder collaborative that has led to lasting systemic change in breaking the nonprofit starvation cycle.Â
While she was on the programmatic side of nonprofits, Alicia became an internationally-published human rights legal researcher. She also co-authored groundbreaking research advocating for victims of mass atrocity, co-founded a nonprofit growing sustainable food access at schools in western Tanzania, and worked on field and national staff teams for two presidential campaigns.Â
In her spare time, Alicia is on the Board of Directors for Xenophon Therapeutic Riding Center in Orinda, CA, and is a Contest Judge for the famed UC Berkeley Big Ideas Contest. Alicia is a certified Executive Coach, Trauma-Informed Care Practitioner, and Alternative Dispute Resolution Mediator. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Peace Studies and Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Chapman University, as well as a Master of Development Practice with an emphasis in Social Impact Strategy from UC Berkeley.Â
